The Secret Path

Bobbin was a lovely, brown and white fluffy Rabbit. His fancy hutch stood in the far corner of a very big garden. He was let out twice a day, first thing in the morning and at around four o’clock in the afternoon. His routine was set in stone and never changed.

Life had been good to Bobbin. He was loved dearly, fed regularly and his hutch was comfortable very cosy. The only thing he wished for was a playmate. He thought it would be fun to share his hatch and dance around the garden.

It was a beautiful sunny day and Bobbin was let out of his hutch for his usual morning hop and jump around the garden. He nibbled at his usual patches of grass, danced around the flowerbeds and finished up by sitting by the garden bench waiting for his owner to pick him up and pet him just before she put him back in his hutch. To his surprise, his owner didn’t come and he wasn’t sure what he should do. He wasn’t going back in his hutch. It was far too interesting in the garden.

After waiting for a few more minutes he hopped and danced around until he found himself at the other end of the garden. He had never been in this part before and it was very exciting. There were plants that smelt wonderful and rows of carrots that seemed to go on for ever. He followed the carrots to the end of the path. When Bobbin reached the end he found himself in another garden bigger than his with two rabbit hutches! He jumped around himself dizzy with excitement.

“What if I meet other rabbits, would they like me? What would I say?”  He remained still for a couple of minutes peeping through the tall blades of grass, when all of a sudden, three rabbits came bounding up to him playfully. Bobbin responded by dancing around them. In a few seconds they were playing catch and hide and seek. Oh what fun he had, he was so very happy.

Bobbin thought it was time to go back to his own garden but as he looked back he couldn’t see the path of carrots. He was feeling very tired so he decided he would have a small rest in the hutch of the other rabbits and make his journey back a little later. The other rabbits joyfully welcomed him in to their hutch and Bobbin found a nice warm corner to settle down.

“What a wonderful day, life really was perfect!” he thought as he drifted off to sleep.

Lilly was crying as her father dug a hole at the end of the garden under the Yew tree.

“ Daddy, do you think Bobbin is happy? Has he gone to Rabbit heaven?

“Yes darling, of course he has gone to heaven. I’m sure he is playing with his other rabbit friends right now.”
